Empress
Elisabeth of Austria
1837-1898
Elisabeth was Empress of Austria and Queen of
Hungary after her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854.
She was popular with the people and nicknamed Sisi.
The
Hungarians held her in particularly high regard because she
supported their autonomy as the Austrian empire morphed into
Austria-Hungary.
After the newspapers reported her presence in Geneva, the anarchist
Luigi
Lucheni travelled to the city and
assassinated her as a protest against the plutocracy.
