Pauline Cushman
1833-1893
Actress who spied for the Union in the Civil War. She had a knack for
getting Confederates to trust her with their secrets. Over her
career, she was shot twice
and captured once, only being rescued from hanging when the Union Army
arrived in the nick of time. She was awarded the rank of Brevet Major
by
Gen. James A Garfield.
