Anne Boleyn
1507-1536
Anne Boleyn is everyone's favorite wife of Henry VIII. There have been five
times as many films/TV episodes telling her story as Catherine Howard
or Anne of Cleves. The whole reason Henry broke from the Roman Catholic
Church was to dump his disappointing first wife so he could marry Anne
Boleyn. Then, after he had disrupted the international order on her
behalf, he changed his mind and had her beheaded on bogus charges.
She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth I, who is probably everyone's favorite English monarch.
Note on the illustration:
After chopping off her head, Hernry spitefully destroyed every portrait of her, which means that we aren't entirely sure what Anne Boleyn looked like. Most of what
passes for her face are later portraits drawn from memory, third-rate
portraits that were not prominently displayed so they slipped through
the net, and portraits of unknown ladies that kinda look like how people remembered her.
