Martha Washington
1731-1802
Martha Dandridge (later Custis, then Washington) was the wife of George
Washington, the first president of the United States, which would make
her
the nation's first first lady although that title hadn't been
invented yet. She was a wealthy young widow with children (below left) when she
married George. She spent about half of the Revolutionary War at the
front keeping her husband company, and the rest of her time managing
her
husbands'
estates back home in Virginia. She raised an army of children,
grandchildren, nieces, and nephews,
but had no children with Washington.
Husbands: George Washington (m. 1759–1799), Daniel Parke Custis (m.
1750–1757)
