Martha Jefferson Randolph

1772-1836

Because Thomas Jefferson was a widower, his daughter Martha handled hostess duties as acting first lady of the US for from 1801-1809. She also served as the first lady of Virginia from 1819-1822 while her husband was governor.

She was the biological niece of Sally Hemings, although we don't talk about that.
