Molly Pitcher
1754-1832
Mary "Molly" Hays was the wife of an American artilleryman in the
Revolutionary War. She hauled water to cool the cannons
and men during battle, so they called her
Molly Pitcher. When her husband passed out from the summer heat at the
Battle of Monmouth, NJ, in June 1778,
she sprang into action and took his place in his cannon crew, fighting
out the rest of the
day.
