Queen Mary II of
Great Britain
1662-1694
She and her husband jointly ruled Britain
after the Glorious Revolution of
1688.
She was the Mary in William and Mary.
King James II had proved to be too Catholic for the Protestants who ran
Parliament, so in 1688 they invited the King's daughter Mary to take over England. She was a Protestant married to a
solid reliable Protestant prince in the Netherlands, William of
Orange. William brought along the Dutch army so the transition went
smoothly. Then the
Brits made it crystal clear in that they would never again allow
themselves to be ruled by
Catholics.
