Ophelia
1300s/1400s
In William Shakespeare's drama
Hamlet, Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius,
sister of Laertes and potential wife of Prince Hamlet. She is driven mad by
Hamlet's actions and
ultimately drowns while acting crazy off-stage (spoiler alert I guess). Of the eleven
characters who die in the play, she is the only truly innocent one. Her death
shows us that Hamlet is playing a very dangerous game with all sorts of
unintended consequences.
