Mary Richardson was a British
suffragette who slashed the canvas of the Rokeby Venus (below) with a meat cleaver in 1914 to
protest the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst. She said she did
not like "the way men visitors gaped at it all day long." During the
1930s, she joined the British fascist movement.
