Mary
Anning
1799-1847
Mary Anning discovered the ichthyosaurus, which was a fishlike marine lizard that is so strikingly fishlike that they
just
had to give it a Greek name meaning Fish Lizard. The similarities are
often noted in textbooks as the perfect example of convergent
evolution: a lizard that lives like a fish will look like a fish..
Anning made many discoveries
in the Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English
Channel
in Dorset. She became internationally
known as a fossil collector, dealer, and
respected palaeontologist when paleontology was still in its infancy.
