Lauren
Bacall
1924-2014
The 1941 film To Have and Have Not
was a Casablanca knockoff. Instead of Humphrey Bogart playing a
cynical bar owner forced to choose sides during the Nazi occupation of
the French colony of Morocco, this film saw Bogart playing a cynical
fishing boat owner forced to choose sides during the Nazi occupation of
the French colony of Martinique.
It began as a story by Hemingway with a script by Faulkner but
what really set it apart from ordinary films was the steamy chemistry
between Bogart and his leading lady, the 18-year-old newcomer Lauren
Bacall. Both Bogart and Bacall noticed the chemistry, too. They almost
immediately started an affair, despite the enormous age difference,
studio disapproval and a Mrs. Bogart already waiting at home.
