Lady of Shalott
12th century
The
Lady of Shalott lived in a tower near Camelot, cursed to never see the
outside world. She could only peek
out her window using a mirror and weave what she saw into a
tapestry. One day she glimpsed Sir Lancelot and fell in love. She couldn't help but stare directly at him out her
window. This triggered the curse. She left her tower to sail down the
river to find him, but she
died before reaching Camelot. The knights of Camelot, including
Lancelot, found the boat and mourned the mysterious beauty of the lady
they never knew.
