Greta Garbo

Born in Sweden, Greta Garbo rose to international fame in the 1920s and 1930s with roles in classics like Anna Karenina and Camille. Regarded as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, she was known for her melancholic and somber screen persona, her film portrayals of tragic characters, and her subtle and understated performances. Garbo retired abruptly at the age of 35, famously valuing her privacy and cultivating the mystique that surrounded her for the rest of her life.

In 1931 she played Mata Hari.
