George
Sand
1804-1876
The pen name of the French writer Aurore Dupin. S/he was very popular
in her day, but nowadays is better known for dressing in men's clothing.
How Lesbian was she?
Oddly, s/he probably wasn't, not in the usual sense. All of Aurore's
romantic relationships were with heterosexual men; however, in addition
to using a male pen name, s/he always dressed as a man, which was
perfectly legal under French law as long as the person registered with
the police as a cross-dresser to avoid any embarassing
misunderstandings. S/he usually, but not always, presented h-self as
a man. Their friends refered to him/her interchangeably as sometimes "he", sometimes
"she". Make of that what you will.
