Evelyn Nesbit

1884-1967

Evelyn Nesbit was a pawn in a feud between two wealthy men. When she first moved to New York as a teenager, the architect Stanford White took her as his lover. However, the railroad heir Harry Kendall Thaw compulsively hated White, so he took Nesbit away from him. Thaw married Nesbit, but he still obsessed jealously over the relationship Nesbit had with White. Finally Thaw snapped and shot White dead at Madison Squre Garden in 1906.

Thaw's trial was the first Trial of the Century of the Twentieth Century. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and was kept in a sanitarium for a few years until he was all better.

BTW: The word "took" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that first paragraph, covering a wide spectrum of abusive and coercive behaviors.
