Eva Peron
1919-1952
Eva Perón, affectionately known as Evita, was
a transformative and polarizing figure in Argentine history who served
as First Lady from 1946 until her death in 1952. Born into poverty in
1919, she pursued an acting career in Buenos Aires before marrying
Colonel Juan Perón. As First Lady, she became a powerful unofficial
co-ruler, championing the rights of the working class (the
descamisados) and securing women's suffrage in 1947. Her legacy is
defined by both her immense popularity among the poor and accusations
of authoritarianism and corruption from her detractors.
