Mladeč 1 (right)
was a skull from the Stone Age found
buried inside a cave in Mladeč in the Czech Republic. Researchers
analysed its genes and reconstructed the facial features, and
determined that the skull
belonged to a 17-year-old female. She lived around
31,000 years ago, during part of the
upper Paleolithic period known as the Aurignacian, and she is one of
the oldest Homo sapiens found in Europe.
How lesbian was she? I said Homo sapiens.
"Ava" (below)
is the archaeologists' nickname for a mysterious Bronze Age
woman buried in Scotland. At first they reconstructed her with red hair because, you know, Scottish. Then through DNA
analysis, they determined that she most likely had brown eyes and black
hair. Measurements of her shinbone showed that she was tall and
stood approximately 5 feet, 7 inches (1.71 meters). Using this data
along with scans of Ava's 3,800-year-old skull, artists created a
facial approximation of what she may have looked like.
