Bessie
Coleman
1892-1926
Bessie Coleman earned her
pilot license in 1921, becoming the first
African-American woman and first self-identified Native
American to do so. While scouting her route for an airshow in
Jackonville FL with her mechanic, engine trouble made her loose control
of the plane. The plane crash killed both of
them.
