King Edward VII said of her: “after my mother, she is the most remarkable woman in the kingdom.”
Born in to a wealthy banking family, she dedicated her life and fortune
to philanthropy. Among other activities, she coordinated charities with
Florence Nightingale and
Charles Dickens, funnelled money into Irish famine relief and
established schools, housing and hospitals for the poor people of
London's East End.
