Amelia Earhart
1897-1937
In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo
across
the Atlantic Ocean. Then in 1937, she set out to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the
world.
She almost suceeded, but on the last leg of her journey, while heading
home, she and her copilot disappeared somewhere out in the
Pacific Ocean.
Every few years, a consortium of amateur archaeologists will claim to
have found tantalizing hints to her fate, such as artifacts or bones on
a deserted islet
or atoll in the middle of the ocean. They will try
to raise money for on-site investigation. I'm sure it's totally legit and
not just an excuse to take an all-expense-paid holiday snorkling in the
coral
reefs and drinking mai-tais on a tropical beach.
How Lesbian was she? Well, there's no actual evidence, but she wore trousers, had short hair and gave Eleanor Roosevelt
a ride in her airplane. (That's not a euphemism for some weird sex
thing. They literally flew to Baltimore. (Also not a euphemism.))
